Bathe Them in Beauty

For the past several years the Lions of District 35-R have collected necessity items for the Bathe Them in Beauty campaign. This year we are inviting the Lions Clubs of District 35-I to participate in this project. The items include soap, shampoo, deodorant, lotion, shaving cream, razors, and other items for personal care. The items can be hotel/motel samples or retail sales items.

The purpose of the drive is to distribute these items to needy individuals in assisted living facilities. These people include the elderly, disabled veterans, and handicapped individuals. There is a great need, and the items are put to good use. This year I am also encouraging donations of underwear for the disabled veterans. They don't have underwear or even enough wheel chairs to go around.

Please bring these items to the joint district 35R & I cabinet meeting to be held on Saturday, March 20 at the Lighthouse of Pinellas Watson Center in Largo, FL.

Thanks for your assistance,

2010 Southeastern Lions Leadership Institute

Dear Lion Leader:
The Planning Committee of the Lions Leadership Institute is excited to announce that we have been endorsed to hold the eleventh regional leadership institute in the southeast. In cooperation with the Leadership Division of Lions Clubs International, six experienced Lion leaders have put in place an outstanding curriculum for both new and senior Lions to develop and enhance their leadership skills. Emphasis is placed on individual participation in a relaxed learning environment.

The Institute is scheduled from the afternoon session at 2:00 EST on Thursday, April 15, 2010, through the graduation ceremony on Sunday, April 18, 2010. Sign in and supplies distribution will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15.

Topics include motivation, thinking outside the box, meeting management, group dynamics and team building, personality and leadership styles, problem solving and conflict resolution, delegation and mobilization of volunteers, diversity and inter-cultural communication, protocol, Lion fundamentals, mentoring, and public speaking.

The Institute will be located in the conference facility of the Hickory Knob State Resort Park, at McCormick, SC. Hickory Knob rests on rolling, wooded shoreline alongside 70,000-acre Strom Thurmond Reservoir on the Savannah River: South Carolina’s “West Coast.”

This package of materials is being sent to all southeastern states within a reasonable driving distance of Hickory Knob State Resort Park, McCormick, South Carolina; so we encourage you to make timely distribution of the information in order that your zones or clubs will have one or more applicants that meet the April 1, 2010, deadline. Please feel free to duplicate this information and to distribute it to any Lion you feel is qualified. Should you have questions, contact any of the faculty listed below.

Respectfully in Lionism,

District 35-R Haiti Earthquake Relief Project

Lions Clubs of District 35-R,

The MD-35 Council of Governors, in coordination with ID Neil Spencer and LCIF, has approved a coordinated MD-35 assistance and relief project for the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. LCIF has advised that monetary contributions are vital at this time to purchase the supplies needed to assist in the rescue efforts. LCIF has awarded a $50,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to help provide for immediate needs for victims following the devastating 7.0 earthquake on January 12. LCIF is in contact with Lions leadership in the area, to assess the situation and determine immediate needs and how Lions and LCIF can best assist.

I urge all Lions Clubs in District 35-R to participate in the Multiple District project by making donations, no matter how large or how small. Monetary donations should be made by check payable to Multiple Districtd-35, with a notation that the money is for the "LCIF Haiti Earthquake Relief” fund. I have appointed 1st Vice District Governor John Carbaugh to Chair this project for District 35-R, in coordination with our LCIF, Disaster Relief, and Zone Chairs. You may send your checks directly to him, or bring them to the Cabinet Meeting on January 23 at the Florida Lions Camp, where we will "kick-off" this relief program. We will then forward the checks to the MD-35 Office Manager. Alternatively, clubs may send a donation directly to LCIF noting that it is for Haiti Earthquake Relief. But please let me know of your donation.

As with past disasters, Lions worldwide are supporting LCIF relief efforts in Haiti. Within 48 hours, Lions worldwide had pledged nearly $250,000 to help. You may keep track of these efforts at this LCIF link: http://www.lionsclubs.org/EN/news-and-events/newsroom/release-96.php

In addition to monetary donations, MD-35 Lions of Florida and The Bahamas will be collecting medical and relief supplies listed below for eventual shipment to Haiti. Any club or Lion who wishes to donate any of the items are encouraged to bring them to the Cabinet Meeting on January 23. All items gathered will be combined with other Multiple District donations and shipped when arrangements are finalized. The items suggested are:

MEDICAL SUPPLIES
First Aid Supplies
Band Aids, Gauze, Bandages, Tape, ACE Bandages
Water Purification Tablets
Alcohol Swabs, Hydrogen peroxide, Iodine, Disinfectants
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol
Gloves
Thermometers, blood pressure cuffs
Stethoscopes

OTHER ITEMS
Bedding, towels, clothing
Soap and personal hygiene items
Flashlights, batteries
Plastic tablecloths, tarps for makeshift shelters
Matches, candles

The Lions of Florida and the Bahamas are committed to providing humanitarian services in support of this disaster and you are encouraged to seek publicity for your efforts by sending news of your support along with Lions' and LCIF's response to the local media.

Thank you!

DG C. David Lloyd
