District Governors Message
Life Is A Ball, After All Balls don't have it easy. They are kicked, punted, slammed, bounced, hit, and flung through hoops. Our world is obsessed with the ball. Futures, careers, memberships, and scholarships are made and lost, around the activity of a ball. Trophies, ribbons, medals, jackets and rings are rewards for carrying a ball into excellence. I don't know of anything else in our culture that demands so much time, effort and money. Athletes are paid big bucks because of their experience and expertise with the ball. Fans worship the ball and revel and cheer when it's in the right hands making the right moves. We stand in line for hours and pay ridiculous prices to see a ball go over a net, through a goal, in a hole, through a goalie, and wherever else balls go to make it big. Avid fans bet money on a ball, sit in stands in freezing weather, fry in the heat, or get soaked in the rain, just to be a part of some adventure centered on a ball. Sports enthusiasts spend days and nights in front of the television looking at the final destination of a ball. Scheduled television programming could be delayed or canceled awaiting a ball's last move. We, as a nation, love being a part of the travels of balls and follow them everywhere. The ball mania begins with the little tykes. Parents start driving little leaguers to their ball games all over the city before children have their second teeth. Meals are postponed, consumed, or missed completely, on the whim of a ball and a call of a coach. When attending their kids' games genteel parents can become obnoxious sideline jerks and exhibit temper tantrums they would never tolerate in their own children, all because of the bounce of a ball. Monday night football, Saturday golf matches and Sunday tennis can keep fans glued to their television sets and away from their family and spouses. Divorce lawyers make a fortune off the intrusion of the ball in our lives. Let us unite and call a time-out. Give balls a much-needed break from our obsession. We might even find pastimes could be present times, if given a chance. Keep the Spirit Alive Lions.
See you after the Super Bowl! DG C. David

1st Vice District Governors Message
Greetings Lions
This article is about community service, but not what
Lions are normally associated with.
I am a craigslist
addict. I am on there every day just
surfing. I have gotten some wonderful
things from there and thank god my house isn't any bigger or I would be more of
a pack-rat than I already am.
Well, anyway, I saw an ad that said "Military team
needs help". I opened the ad and it was from the Softball Team at Mac Dill
Air force Base and they had qualified to play in the Special Services
Slow-Pitch Softball World Tournament, which happened to be taking place in
Panama City Beach, FL.
I spoke to my club,
the Lutz-Land O Lakes Lions, and they unanimously agreed to provide the $315.00
entrance fee. Three of the players came
to our club and accepted the donation.
Then a problem arose.
Usually the base provides transportation for functions like this, but
the days they needed transportation, some big-wigs were coming to base so they
needed to find their own transportation.
They made a deal with a rental company that would allow them to rent a
15 passenger van for a week for $395.00. They emailed me, and I told them I
would see what I could work out.
Well it just so happens that the Governor's Conference
was taking place in Orlando, so I bravely asked permission to speak to all of
the Governors, VDG's, partners in service, and others that were there to see if
we could take up a collection to help them with their transportation.
I was amazed, absolutely amazed, I collected $338.00 from those terrific
Lions. At our Zone meeting last Monday I
was presented with another $30.00 to help get our team to the World
Championship. They made it there and
took 3rd place over all. Three of the team
members were named to the all world team, and one was named MVP of the
tournament.
I will enclose a
couple of pictures. One of them is of President Lois Lastinger of the 4L's
presenting a check to the captain of the team Ray King. In the background is the remainder of the
4L's Lions Club members .

2nd Vice District Governors Message
Hello Lions,
As I write
this news letter, I am thinking WOW! We are already into our 3rd month.
Time passes us by so quickly.
We
are growing! Thank you, to the clubs that have brought in new members;
keep up the good work Lions.
I apologize
to Lion Ernie Vanselow, Zone Three Chairman, for missing their recent zone
meeting. I won't miss the next one Lion Ernie.
Zone 1
had 7 Clubs and 48 members attend their first zone meeting. Two great Speakers,
and a visit from MD 35-O, 2nd V.D.G. Doris Turlo. Thanks Doris
for attending our meeting, and for your support.
I am
also the District Cultural & Community Activities Chairman.
We, as Lions, need to help fill our Community Food Pantry. "Yes, they
are very low," said a spokesperson from one of our Family
Service Centers. They still need lots of school supplies and
volunteers to help during the Holidays.
Caring
and Sharing is what Lions are all about, so please join me, and lets
get out and sign up a new member, fill the food pantries, and do what
we do best, Serve.
Yours
in Lionism

Cabinet Secretary's Message
As we step into our third month of this Lions year, many exciting things are taking place in 35-R. I congratulate all of the club Secretaries - every MMR report was filed on time for the month of July. I hope the momentum keeps up. Just remember, filing your MMR by the 25th of the month helps others make their reporting deadlines.
We had six new members in July, two transfers from another club, and one reinstated member. With the 14 Clubs that have filed their August reports (as of 8/24), we had another five new members, but, unfortunately, one deceased member.
By the time this newsletter is published our first 35-R Cabinet meeting will be part of our history. Hopefully all that attended were able to increase their knowledge of Lions procedures no matter what position they are presently holding.
The
2008-2009 Club Presidents still have an opportunity to submit their
applications for 100% President and Secretary. If I receive them by
September 10, they will reach LCI by the deadline.
Of the 8
clubs in Zone 1 that will be transferring to the new "O", 18
Lions attended the first 35-O Cabinet Meeting that was held in
Sanford. It gave us an opportunity to meet so many members that we will
be closely associated with. Also there were Lions from The new District
"D" that will also be joining the new "O". For those
members that don't normally attend the Conferences, it gave them a chance to
visit with the Lions that we will begin an association with next Lions year.
Coming up in
September and October there are only two Zone meetings scheduled. Always
check either the District Directory or our website for the dates.
We all need
to get ourselves and our clubs familiar with the District, Multiple District
and LCI's websites. They are all a wealth of information. All
aspects of Lionism are covered within each site for the Lions they primarily
serve. Let's all use the sites to better help us serve our communities
thru our mission "WE SERVE".
Have a good
month; hope to see many of you at the happenings during the month.

Cabinet Treasurer's Message
For those of you concerned about receiving the District Dues notices, there is some good news. The regular dues invoices have been received by the Governor for our District 35-R, however we are waiting for the breakdown of the Pro-Rated dues per club.
I wish to wait and send them out together, instead of sending them in two separate mailings, as was done the last billing, which created a lot of confusion!
I apologize for not being able to attend the Cabinet Meeting Saturday August 29th, but I will be attending Leader Dog School in Rochester, Michigan that weekend. The new budget for 2009-10 will be presented for approval at that meeting, and my able assistant Cathy will be available for the Parade of Checks and other duties for the Cabinet Meeting.
Have a pleasant meeting, and I will see you the next time!
Cabinet Treasurer Lion Dennis Walton

Dear Lions
It has now been a month since we were together in Minneapolis and I hope that
you are already beginning to see positive movement in your district.
I am very pleased that the goal-setting process at the district governors-elect
seminar produced such ambitious membership goals. This makes it even more
important that you lose no time in moving toward the expected growth in your
district. Please remember that Quick Start Ginkgo Awards will be
presented to district governors who extend membership before August 30.
Awards will be presented for new clubs, net membership growth and for new
members other than charter members. Qualifications for awards vary by
constitutional area.
There is little time left before the deadline. Move fast!
You have my best wishes for success in all your goals.
With cordial regards,
Eberhard J. Wirfs, International President

Dear Lion Governor Lloyd,
This Cabinet Meeting note (format) is
terrific! Whatever it may look like to sighted readers, the point is that
the JAWS screen reading software is reading the text
aloud.
FYI: "blind" Lions that have some
partial vision or eyesight, and are using "zoomtext"
magnification may have a different reaction to this format.
When we have JAWS open the email, the
speech program commences to read it aloud. This is certainly most welcome
-- over that pdf format -- which is a horror story for us.
Hopefully this format is available to Catherine
Walton, PDG for her monthly newsletter. JAWS does verbalize that there
is/are graphics in this notice of "first cabinet meeting".
Naturally a speech program does not describe the graphics. Is/are the
graphic(s) important to the content of the text of the notice to members?
Is there a road map that sighted persons might benefit from?
Much
gratitude!
Lion
Art,
Hudson
- Bayonet Point Foundation.
----------------
Dear Lion Art
Thank
you for your input and I was very happy that Governor David and I have finally
found a format that you and other blind Lions can enjoy.
You
asked if the pictures were important to the story. You are the most important
part of the story and in the future I will try to be as explicit as
possible so you will understand what is in the newsletter.
All
district communications will be sent in this format.
Yours
In Service,
District

Membership Chairperson and Club Presidents
Hello Lions: Now is the time to develop plans for a successful year in membership. Our International President Eberhard Wirfs said: " The future is rooted in the past. The future needs vision. Vision without action is only a dream". Now is our time for planning and action. Listed are the duties of a Lions Clubs Membership Committee and Chairperson. 1. As soon as possible, develop plans to obtain new members, and a plan for membership retention. 2. Hold committee meetings on a regular basis. 3. Develop a prospect list with input from club members. 4. Make certain that new members are inducted with an appropriate and timely ceremony. 5. Arrange for orientation programs for new members, either by membership committee, club meeting, or a zone or district function. 6. Get an early warning on members with poor attendance. Arrange a phone call or visit before they are dropped. 7. Remember, a member saved is a member gained. I am available to talk to your Lions Club about membership and running a membership night. Know that I work for you and that my door is always open. Please call or e-mail me. Lion Dave St. Martin PDG 23 C Cell 860 933-1163 e-mail dstmartin47@hotmail.com
